Established in 2009 (as Porcupine Quill Brewing Company), the brewery forms part of 1000 Hills Chef School where Advanced Students learn the art of Craft Beer Brewing. This brings a unique approach to brewing – with flavour and food in mind. In true craft tradition, we prefer not to follow any particular style too closely but rather experiment with our own styles.

Founded by Rhodes University graduates Balgowan Brewery, Cindy Slater (PhD in Biochemistry) and Stefan Just (MSc in Electronics) turned their passion for home brewing into a full-time craft beer business. Settling in the Midlands Meander, they established the brewery at Midlands Forest Lodge, refining recipes through extensive experimentation. Combining scientific expertise with meticulous brewing processes, Balgowan Brewery produces high-quality, authentic craft beers using both local and imported ingredients.

Originally a home-brewing hobby, Ballito Brewing Company was founded by Ursula and Gary Wilby after leaving the corporate world. Established in 2015 in Shaka's Head near Ballito, the microbrewery produces eight international beer styles. Inspired by a passion for brewing, the couple built the business from scratch and can now brew virtually any beer style on demand.

Founded in 2013 in Pennington, Basset Breweries grew from a small craft brewery into a distributor across KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Founder Andy Turner turned his passion for European beer styles and years of home brewing into a full-time business, alongside partner Natalie Danks. Known for its diverse range of craft beers, including seasonal Steam Punk brews, Basset Breweries offers styles to suit every beer enthusiast.

Founded in 2014 by two friends in a Durban garage, Bruworks Brewing Co began as a home-brewing passion project. Recognising a need for quality, affordable craft beer, they turned their hobby into a business. Based in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, the brewery combines engineering expertise with brewing innovation, using custom-built equipment and 3D printing technology to create accessible, great-tasting craft beers.

Clockwork Brewhouse is not just a brewery name. It describes the meticulous and organised approach to brewing, combined with a preference for old-fashioned, 'traditional' beer styles. The beers aim to be full of flavour and complexity, and yet still easy drinking. This is beer to be savoured.

Established as the Zulu Kingdom's first craft distillery, Distillery 031 began distilling in 2009 and opened to the public in 2015. Located in Durban's Station Drive Creative Precinct, the distillery produces small-batch artisanal spirits inspired by the city's unique character. Its range includes Durban Dry Gin, 031 Vodka, Agua Zulu Cachaça and Ancestors Absinthe, crafted using locally sourced ingredients and hands-on production methods.

Doctrine Brewing is built on a philosophy of prioritising quality and originality over profit. The brewery is committed to crafting distinctive beers that stand apart from the mainstream, using only premium ingredients without compromise. Guided by the belief that trying to please everyone pleases no one, Doctrine Brewing focuses on producing unique, characterful beers that remain true to its core values and brewing principles.

Drakensberg Brewery is a Craft Brewery in the heart of the Drakensberg. The brewery is a 600L batch brewhouse and fermenters intended to service the local community and visitors to our picturesque valley. The beer is made from malted barley, hops, yeast and fresh spring water. The brewery produces its beer in 30L kegs or 440ml bottles.

What began as home brewing on a kitchen stove grew into a thriving craft brewery in Durban North. Driven by a passion for perfecting great beer, the brewery now produces 500 litres per batch using state-of-the-art equipment. Known for its easy-drinking Hot Blonde and flavourful Amber Jack, the brewery supplies retailers, restaurants and local markets, offering fresh, approachable craft beers for every occasion.

East Coast Brewing Company is an independent craft brewery in KwaZulu-Natal dedicated to "Brewing a Lifestyle" inspired by the East Coast way of life. Led by brewer and third-generation beverage entrepreneur Rocco Fontana, the state-of-the-art brewery produces balanced, refined beers, including lagers, session IPAs and seasonal releases. Combining premium international ingredients with local South African produce, the brewery creates authentic beers designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes.

Born and bred in the "031", Jabula Brew Co was founded by maverick home brewer and events organiser Warren Eades. His passion lies in unifying people from different communities through entertainment and craft beer. Jabula's "fruitilicious" beers embody the soul of summer.

Irish born Ronald McClelland has had a lifelong love affair with beer. He started brewing as a hobby, and after locals demanded more, he imported a Speidel Braumeister from Germany. Now with a beer garden open Thursday–Sunday, visitors can enjoy tours, taps, and country platters.

Founded by entrepreneur Vuyo Valashiya, Newcastle Brewing Company was established to give Newcastle its own locally produced craft beer. Inspired by South Africa's growing craft beer industry, Valashiya launched Newcastle Lager to celebrate local craftsmanship while creating employment opportunities and supporting community development. With ambitions to expand into ciders and spirits, the brewery aims to grow both the local economy and the Newcastle brand nationally and internationally.

Nguni Brewing Co. was founded by three partners: one brew master and two beer enthusiasts. The brand features the head of a Nguni cow — a symbol of the East Coast's heritage. Each Nguni cow bears unique markings, much like human fingerprints, embodying their passion for creating unique beer.

Situated on the grounds of Rawdons Hotel in the Midlands Meander, Nottingham Road Brewery is a well-established independent brewery renowned for its naturally brewed ales and lagers. Using pure spring water from an on-site artesian well, along with premium hops and malted barley, the brewery produces distinctive, smooth-tasting beers enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, with its products available at selected outlets across South Africa.

Founded in 2006 by Stuart and Sherene Robson, this pioneering micro-brewery is now under new ownership. Operating from Durban's Point district since 2016, it brews 1,640 liters per batch across eight distinct variants. Established in 2019 in rural KZN, Rockford Brewery is a nano-craft brewery creating unfiltered, unpasteurized, bottle-conditioned beers. Self-taught brewer Tom uses 100% natural ingredients for small-batch quality. While the production facility is not open to the public, their developed American Pale Ale and Blonde Ale are available at select outlets in Howick and Ballito, alongside an alternating beer on tap at the Greytown Country Club.

Founded in 2019 by Andy and Tom, Stumpnose Brewery & Tap Room is set in a character-filled former trading store in Kloof. Featuring German beer hall-style seating directly beside the brewing equipment, the venue boasts ten taps. They serve a revolving selection of new and guest beers alongside a core range of local favorites, including their Endless Summer American Pale Ale, The Fisherman American IPA, and Mrs O’nions Brown Ale.

How did THAT happen? Sean Roberts predicted craft beer would wash upon Durban's shores and opened Unity Bar. After a chance meeting with home brewer Paul Ten Hoorn Boer, the two built a 300l brewery in a garage. Today they operate from The Foundry in Station Drive with a restaurant and taproom.

The Toti Brewing Company is a local craft brewery situated in the Southgate Industrial Park in Umbogintwini, eManzimtoti. They are known for producing a variety of local craft beers and hosting patrons for a relaxed, casual environment.

Founded in 1997 by the Chennells family, Zululand Brewery is a historic craft beer powerhouse based in Eshowe. As the smallest brewery on the KZN Brew Route, they handcraft premium beers like Zulu Blonde and Zululand Pale Ale using high-quality local and global ingredients. Expanding to a quirky, Instagrammable restaurant on Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga, they now serve diverse meals, craft beers, and specialty spirits in a cozy, culturally-inspired space.
